Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Which Should Your Local Business Run First?

The Most Common Question We Get

Almost every new client asks us the same thing: should we run Google Ads or Facebook and Instagram Ads? The honest answer is that both platforms work — but they work differently, and the right starting point depends entirely on your business type and how your customers find you.

Google Ads: Capturing Intent

Google Ads are what we call intent-based advertising. Someone searches for 'emergency plumber Bradenton' or 'HVAC repair near me' — they already know they have a problem and they're actively looking for a solution. Your ad appears at the top of the results, and if your landing page is good, they book. The conversion path is short.

This is why we almost always start local service businesses on Google Search first. The leads are warmer, the sales cycle is shorter, and you can see a clear return on ad spend quickly.

Meta Ads: Creating Demand

Facebook and Instagram Ads work on an interruption model. Nobody is searching for your business — they're scrolling through their feed and your ad stops them. This means you're creating demand rather than capturing it, which requires more creative, more testing, and generally a longer warm-up period before you see conversions.

That said, Meta is incredibly powerful for businesses with a visual product or service, strong before/after results, or a tight local geographic target. Retargeting on Meta — showing ads to people who've already visited your website — is one of the highest-ROI plays available.

Our Recommendation for Most Local Businesses

Start with Google Search Ads for immediate, high-intent leads. Layer in Meta retargeting within 30–60 days once your pixel has data. Then, once you have a proven funnel, expand Meta to cold audiences with your best-performing creative.

The key is that neither platform works without a conversion-optimised landing page and a proper lead management system on the other end. Ads drive traffic — your website and booking system converts it.
